I don’t like Mondays…
As the Boomtown Rats song of 1979 goes, not that many people are that fond of Monday's.
Although that said, I don't imagine that that many of the people that don't like Monday's are likely to go on a killing spree...
If only that woman, from that song, based on that real life scenario, had seen this picture, the song may not even have existed....
So why do Monday's get such a bad wrap? Is it because we have been unwittingly pulled from our beds at an ungodly hour due to the harsh calling of the early morning alarm, or the fact that we have received literally thousands of e-mails during the weekend and that our two days of rest and relaxation seem like a mere distant memory by 9am on a Monday?
We don't need Bill Murray to tell us (although how cool would that be?!) we can be AWESOME any day. Believe that you are, and you will be. Go be awesome this Monday, or Tuesday, or Wednesday, or Thursday, or even Friday and you will be :-)
I may not be the most awesome of designers, there's always room for improvement, but I believe that I bring something to the table through positivity and enthusiasm and commitment. With me doing your graphic design work, I can guarantee that what I deliver is always my best, and then I'll let you decide if my skills are awesome or not.
A brand spanking new portfolio update
Goodness gracious me! Here comes another sporadic blog post all the way from my dining room. I have been updating my website of late and so I thought that I would write a little note saying so.
Since my first www.offthewallcreative.co.uk site built back in 2008 on good old Dreamweaver, my graphic design portfolio (and website) has developed beyond all recognition, and my skills and confidence have sky rocketed! With my portfolio not only covering offline print projects, but designing for web on desktop, tablet and mobile responsive sites - but even apps! The projects on show within this portfolio are predominantly print based, with a few web ideas thrown in for good measure.
I've learned a lot along the way from my first steps at Curly Kale to my slightly larger ones in my current role, and have branched into the world of marketing too. It's all contributing to the tapestry of my artistic life...
Have a look through the updated portfolio - and see what you think!
Curly Kale – small but mighty!
Howdy folks! I can't believe we've got to March and until now I haven't felt compelled to write in my blog... But on this snowy Saturday I have been struck by the need to tell you all about a fantastic team of web designers who will bust a gut to get your website out on time!
It stems really from the fact that I was asked recently to help a small start up business take it's first steps into the world of web - and so I pointed them in the direction of Curly Kale who know far more about this kind of thing than me. A small yet mighty team, often fuelled by espresso coffee, who work around the clock to help their clients find their feet on the world wide web, designing and coding their little hearts out to meet a clients every need - be this a snazzy website, an online shop or e-shot campaign - they've done it all and they've done it for years!
I am a little biased when it comes to Curly Kale as they took me on for an internship when everybody else looked down their noses at me. I'm not trendy and I don't have multiple piercings or a masterful fashion sense - I enjoy a good disney holiday every now and then and the colour (not pantone) red and that was enough for them to see I was a kindred spirit! They may not be trendy and they may not have a pool table (or a pool for that matter) but Curly Kale can be trusted to meet your design needs! Big or small they've done it all - yes really! As I advised my friend the other day, if you want a logo, if you want a flyer or a website or an online shop or advice on social media or someone who actually knows what SEO means - give them a bell - they'd invite you over for a cup of tea and a jammy dodger and talk to you about what you want.... And they'd get it done, within budget and on time, because beneath it all they believe in putting a customer first.
That's what I told my friend, and that's what I tell everyone who asks me about website design, and that's why I thought I should share it with you :-)

David Hull – A Musician Extraordinaire
David Hull is a musician extraordinaire. With over 20 years of experience within the world of music, currently a bandleader on HAL cruises he aspires to be a singer/songwriter - and I promised to help him get there. Problem is, I haven't got a clue where to start....
Firstly I'll provide a link to one of my favourite tunes - 1,2,3,4 - a cool little dance number, written and recorded by David himself. His personal favourite is a song about an Unhappy Clown inspired by a particularly bad day at the office. Lastly I'll show you a bass production that literally took the world by storm the Mozart's Turkish Rondo arranged by David, and played purely on a bass guitar.... awesome!!
See what you think - if you like what you see, why not check out the rest of his YouTube channel? With over 900 subscribers you won't be on your own! Look out for deha music co. You saw it here first...
A selection of his work is also available on iTunes. Here's my favourite album (or should I say EP?) it's called Miles Away From Home, very apt for the world traveller that he is!
The Olympics are coming III
Admittedly I haven't written anything for a while, this is mainly down to the fact that I was involved in a traffic accident and so haven't had the ability to think straight or operate heavy machinery for a while. I'm on the mend though now and although the left hand side of me is somewhat incapacitated it is the right side I use the most! The upshot of this accident is that I was able to watch rather more of the Olympics than I initially thought I would be able to - that avid viewer adding to the viewer count of the BBC, although for a large part of it I wasn't totally compus mentus (probably spelled horribly wrong) as they say....
I did however manage to catch the opening ceremony a few days later, and although some opinions are divided - I thought it was awesome! A great audio and visual treat to the senses, a job well done on Danny Boyle's part. A ten out of ten for creativity I would say, and a fantastic transition for the stadium itself from green and pleasant lands, to industrial metropolis a walk through history in less than 3 hours.
The flame lighting (something that my dad had already billed as I watched a few days later as the best lighting of the olympic torch ever...) was a work of art in itself, the joining together of the nations in light. The opening ceremony launched the party and as many have already claimed, London 2012 for the few weeks it was in town certainly was the greatest show on earth. Bring on the paralympics I say!
As an artist of sorts, I do love it when people embrace the arts, be it music or face painting, or theatre or just being impressed by the posters on the walls of the venues, or saving the ticket you had for an event just because you like the purple. Art brings interest to anything, and everything starts as an idea - the Olympics has shown that anything can be achieved if you have the passion - so go on, give in to your inner artist, try something new. Me, I've got thousands of ideas thanks to the olympics, I may just give them a go...
The Olympics are Coming part II
I'm sure that the majority of you have probably seen the BBC promo for the Olympics by now, but if not CLICK HERE.
A fantastic piece of 3D animation by all accounts, although dare I admit it, but I have to say I prefer the 2008 Olympic video starring the hand drawn, oriental flavoured character Monkey:
SEE HERE.
See what you think... Welcome to the House of Fun
A highlight of the Diamond Jubilee for me, apart from the extra bank holiday of course, was the concert featuring musicians and artists spanning generations. And if I had to choose an absolute highlight - it had to be the animation projected onto Buckingham Palace that accompanied the Madness classic "Our House."
Having studied animation, I do like to see a good example every now and then... I thought the creativity behind it was impressive and definitely fun! What particularly caught my eye was the fluidity and narrative of the animation and the how well it synched with the stories within the music. The imagination of how each scene literally folded into the next, or how the double decker bus drove along to unveil a row of terraces with animated scenes within the internal rooms was well constructed and a great advert for the animation industry within the UK.
Anyway, the company responsible for this great piece of artistry are a studio based in London, Trunk Animation Ltd. Check out the rest of their work here: http://trunk.me.uk/
The Olympics are Coming
Last Thursday, the 31st May 2012, the olympics came to my town.
Having applied for tickets last year and been unsuccessful, and hearing about all the money being spent and the chaos that will ensue, and how millions of tickets are now up for grabs as sponsorship prizes even though I was willing to pay for them - you could say that I wasn't embracing the Olympics to it's full potential. However, when the torch relay came to town I joined the crowds and lined the streets with the rest of them (although admittedly I didn't wave a miniature flag). Seeing the excitement build as the opening ceremony grows ever closer, I only wish that I had gotten those elusive tickets. Something fantastic will be going on down in London this summer and I would've loved to be part of the atmosphere as it is, as has been said throughout the torch relay coverage, a once in a lifetime experience. To experience a world event literally metres from home was quite special and enough for me to appreciate that the Olympics are well and truly coming despite the traffic problems, despite the money, despite me not getting tickets. It made me remember too that a few years back I designed something up about the London Olympics. The design was loosely based on the union jack and inspired by the media hype surrounding this global event. The torch relay revamped my original enthusiasm for Britain hosting the games and I truly hope that the London Olympics are as unforgettable as I originally hoped. It’s been a long time
Hi folks!
Whoa it's been a long time since I last posted a blog, you may've thought I 'd disappeared off the face of the earth, but for those concerned I have not. I am here.
I'm debating whether or not to plunge myself into the world of Twitter having managed a few accounts at work. Incidentally I was working on one and tweeted about an office sweepstake on the Eurovision song contest - to which Graham Norton responded to!! It sent me all of a quiver...
Anyway, my news and views will hopefully be on the rise, but will always remain slightly off the wall. Can you handle that?
